Thursday night I went out to Karaoke with Other Kim, a friend from college, and M, a friend of hers from college. Other Kim, aka Kimberly, found a great little place in the West Village that's reasonably priced and has small private rooms, so the 3 of us had our own. I'm not a fan of those karaoke bars where you're singing in front of strangers and have to share the mike.
This was our second time going just the three of us, we went last week too. It was soooo much fun!, and a great way to end a busy, stressful week at work. We're going back next week :-)
Friday was crazy at work. I had 2 high-priority deadlines, and then JC tells me that the French team bounced back his report again, and asked would I take a look at it? It turned out that there was one glaring problem (which I caught and fixed), and one problem that took until 3:30 to diagnose... and I leave at 3 on Fridays. I didn't mind staying late, especially since the guy from the French office was at work still at 9:30 on a Friday night. My boss rocks, he knew I had to get home for for Shabbat so he took over troubleshooting so I could leave.
I didn't go straight home, I stopped at my Grandma's a couple of blocks away from my house. It was her birthday Friday, so everyone went over there with cake and cards and flowers. She's really out of it, but she seemed okay yesterday and happy to see us. She really liked the sparklers on her cake, so we relit it and resang happy birthday. She was joking a little and gave my dad a hard time. It was good to see her.
I called my LNS on Thursday night and asked them to mail me a couple of things I'd ordered, because I haven't had time to go out there to pick them up. Well guess what showed up in the mail Saturday! It takes me 30-45 minutes to drive to my LNS and I usually have to leave work early to do it, so I think I'll be ordering from them a lot more in the future. It was a small order this time - just some buttons for my F & S exchange and the LHN Iced Tea Threadpack. I'm doing the Tea threadpacks on 1 piece of fabric, and I'm considering finishing them as a boxtop for a teabox, if I can find a pretty wooden box that fits them.
This morning I woke up with a sore throat and the worst cold, so I canceled my plans to go meet my friends and see their new baby. Don't want to get a baby sick! I got an email from the French guy that they needed their report rerun, so I did that... and hopefully built a little goodwill towards the NY office.
There's a superbowl party on the UWS but I'm really not in the mood to take all those trains with my cold. Oh well, my dad's having some friends over here to watch the game, I can crash with them :-)

Another long weekend bites the dust
JS and I went bm dress shopping yesterday morning. We were going so that JS could check out colors and designers, not to buy a dress. JS is going to order everyone's together so that the dye lot's the same - and she's not even a stitcher, I am so impressed with her. Plus she's from Jersey, the land of no-sales-tax-on-clothing, so her mom will place the final order over there.
Bridesmaid dresses, or at least all the ones we've been looking at, are sleeveless about 98% of the time. At Orthodox weddings, which this is, people dress more modestly - sleeveless and low necklines (or low cut backs) are not done. Usually what ends up happening is the bride picks a fabric (and might even give it to the BMs) and the bms have a dress made in any style they like. It's more expensive than off-the-rack (about $200-$300) but they really don't make any bm dresses that are ready-to-wear modestly.
JS is very considerate and so she's trying to find a designer that has jackets or something so that we can buy off the rack. It's hard though, there isn't a large selection of jackets and a) they're often not completely represented on the designer's website and b) it's hard to tell how they will look when paired with a dress. So basically, JS and I went to check out the jacket situation for the designer she likes, Alfred Angelo, and some others.
We met up at Penn Station and walked over to RK Bridal on 39th St. They had probably 20 different designers, but we started with Alfred Angelo. Jill pulled the 2 jackets that she liked (the 3rd was very professional looking) and then we tried on like 30 dresses. We have different body types so JS tried on also so that we could see how different styles looked with the jackets. I had lots of fun trying on dresses, but in the end we were there for 3 hours trying on and a half hour poring through books, so it got a little tiring by the end.
We went out for pizza afterwards to catch up, and we were near enough to Times Square to catch some of the preparations for that night's party. We both went home afterwards, no block party for us.
My dad says we have a family tradition of going out for dinner together at 5pm on the 31st, so that's what we did. Over the course of dinner we started discussing cars, since the lease on my mom's car is up in the summer. My mom makes the final decision but we all drive the car, so my brothers always push something they'd want to drive and I advocate more eco-friendly models. Long story short, my middle brother and I have a deal that if I bicycle to work for 3 months to *prove my commitment to saving energy* or something, he'll switch his vote to an eco-friendly vehicle (that I approve of). It's 5.4 miles to work and the route is very hilly so I don't know if that's going to happen, but I'm going to try it out tomorrow.
I am allowed to take public transportation but must take the bike more often than the transport. So I'll probably bike to PW but take the public transport on days I work in NYC.
Today I biked to Michael's as a test run, since it's about 1/2way through my commute. Round trip (including shopping) was 90 minutes, so if you take out the 45 minutes I spent at Michael's I'll need about an hour to get to work. There are some very steep hills in both directions and the plan is to walk the bike most of the way up at first. I don't like sweating, and the point of this is ecological not exercisical. If after tomorrow's trial I decide to go for the whole 3 months, then I'll make plans to build stamina to tackle the hills.
This is a good segue into my Goals for 2008. Resolutions if you will.
1. Keep blogging every month. Try for multiple posts per week or once weekly at worst
2. Continue tracking all project starts, finishes and progress on my blog so I can keep finally count my yearly finishes. I know I have a bunch of finishes in 2007, but no idea how many, I have the worst memory ever :-(
3. Organize my stitching rotation system. Currently I have none.
4. Make a biscornu
5. An ecological resolution, something along the lines of starting to use Freecycle and riding my bicycle more frequently. We need a Velib in NYC!
I'm not feeling inspired about the resolutions so I'll come back to them later.
Last night I went to a small gathering at DP's house. It was Chavi's last night in NY so I wanted to see her, and that's where she was going. We watched Employee of the Month and since Chavi was crocheting a kipah (and the lights were gonna be on anyways), I brought along SB Wish. I'm hoping to finish it on 1/1 but we'll see.
This morning I woke up super early - 8:00 - to go to the Lazy Daisy sale. 30% off charts before 11am, so I got a bunch of stuff. There were a couple of JBW Country charts, some LHN and CCN, and I even found 2 awesome Mirabilia fairies, in case I should ever finish Ivy.
Next I went to pick up some books from a Freecycler that lives near my LNS. I signed up for my local Freecycle group because I have some books to get rid of myself, and now here I am with a net gain! Oh well, I'm going to read and then freecycle them back again so it will (hopefully) be a wash. And now that I've benefited from the system I have more internal nudging to participate myself :-D
This afternoon I met up with JF's recent ex for lunch. It was really good to see him and it wasn't awkward at all, they're both too nice to put their friends in the middle. I worked on Wish for a bit, then went to Michael's. Dinner was sushi with the family, then Coldstone for dessert. Now it's time to stitch a bit and go to sleep. I have a big ride in the morning.

Snow
Last night was Sit & Stitch at Lazy Daisy :-) I recognized everyone from the last one I went to, in October. I brought BC Snappers and my exchange... and got a lot of the November block done.
I picked up some threads I'm missing for BC Snappers (hopefully the last of them), some extras to send along to my Fair Square exchange partner, an LHN chart about winter, and the new Just Cross Stitch magazine. I was on the fence about the mag until I saw Diane Williams' chart "Winter Symphony". I used to love the Tikki Room at Disney, and the phrase on the chart is one of the songs from the Tikki Room show. Well it was, they might have cut it when they redesigned the *ride* with Iago and Zazu a few years ago. I have a ton of stuff to stitch now, but eventually I'll get to it.
It started snowing around 10, 10:30 this morning. A. decided at 11:30 not to come to the office & go bowling since she'd have a hard time getting home again. At 1:00 bowling was canceled. At 3:15 it got dark out and stayed that way - over an hour early. So Snow & I didn't get off to a good start today.
For some reason, 3-4 people approached me independently to ask whether I'd brought my motorcycle to work. What's up with that, schadenfreude?
I left the office at 5:30. At some point in the afternoon the snow had turned to sleet so the parking lot was a slushy mush, but I could drive through it. Snow would've been a problem. My problem was trying to get out of the parking lot - who's the genius who makes both exits uphill? Worried about not being able to stop at the top, I went a bit too slow & didn't make it all the way up to the exit, and once I stopped & had no more momentum, I couldn't go forward at all.
Luckily I had the worst time driving in the snow last year too, so I knew some tricks. Like that I'd need momentum. And to try reversing. So 15 minutes later I'd gotten stuck, reversed, driven to the other (less steep) exit, gotten stuck again, uturned, gotten stuck again, and was ready to storm the exit again. With the whole momentum thing in mind I *floored* it to 20mph, steered straight, and made it out, all on my own :)
The rest of the roads were cleared, so I went shopping as I'd planned to before I got the bowling invite. At AC Moore I picked up some DMC threads on sale and the rest of the things for my Fair Square exchange. I also got a couple of things for the gift exchange we're doing at work. I'm buying for someone that I know but don't work with. He travels and likes casinos so I'm going with that. For $2 I got some chocolate coins - which are gambly and also Chanukah-y (I think he's also Jewish), and a huge book of sudoku puzzles, which is something he could take to do on a plane. I have another $13 in my budget but I'm not sure what to get. Maybe some sort of book? I forsee plenty of googling in my future until I figure out what to get.

Call S. & make sure that Rummikub is on for Saturday.

Weekend update (without Tina Fey & SNL)
Shabbos was quiet. My friend that sometimes walks over for Rummikub on Saturday afternoons is in grad school and taking finals so our weekly game was off this week. I got a lot of reading done and thought about cleaning, so pretty much the usual minus the rummikub.
Saturday night was the family Chanukah party. As I was getting ready, something very strange happened to me: my mom asked if she could borrow some jewelry. To my knowledge, she's only ever worn "real" jewelry, whereas I go for beads and crystals. So this was definitely a first. Unfortunately I couldn't come through for her, she was wearing a purple sweater and the only purple necklace I have is a lavender one (that I made) that she thought was too light-colored. Luckily when I got to work today, T had brought in most of her collection. I bought this necklace (in purple) for my mom, it'll go perfectly with the sweater and it has too many different kinds of beads for me to try and make one myself. The best part is, I can borrow it from her :)
Anyways, back to the Chanukah party. My maternal grandmother used to host it every year at her house in Queens, and invite everyone: all her kids and grandkids, her nieces & their families, even her kids-in-laws' families. A couple of years ago when Grandma did something weird to her foot (like spraining it) so she couldn't host the Chanukah party my aunt stepped up
and had it at her house. She was slow on the invites this year, so her and my mom's cousin said she'd host it at her house. This cousin has never had the family over before for a party, so it was nice to be there.
The party itself went well, everyone chatted, looked at picture proofs from my cousin's wedding last October, and the kids played together well. My aunt & uncle said they missed me - last year when they had the party at their house Saturday night they invited everyone to spend shabbos, and my grandparents and I took them up on it. I haven't seen this aunt & uncle & their family as much, because we used to see each other on weekends in the Catskills over the summer but this year they weren't there when I was, so we've been missing each other in general. We made up to have a weekend at their place in January, and then it looks like 3-4 of my cousins are coming too which they are quite happy about. I know their kids are going to be thrilled :)
Then my cousin (the one that just got married) wanted to know why I hadn't visited them for shabbos yet. Hello? You're newlyweds, plus you haven't invited me! Well now I am invited, so I'm going there sometime in January or February.
I love visiting family. Once I finally get my own place I'm going to have a lot of return visitors.
Of course we had a gift exchange at the Chanukah party. I was covered for all but 2 cousins since I took everyone to HSM the Ice Tour. The other 2 got IOUs for unspecified handmade items. I owe one a scarf, and the other is the one getting the wedding sampler. Both are projects that will take forever, and they're not picky about it being on time since I'm the only one in my generation who gets gifts for people, it's mostly just the aunts & uncles & grandparents who get for the *kids*. I just think that at 24, I'm not such a kid anymore. Plus I love to shop :-)
C got me the coolest flip flops, and another aunt, the one with little kids, brought Webkinz. Cute stuffed animals are always good gifts. I made a necklace for C but forgot it home. Typical. I also forgot to bring the gift I got for UD - 2 little moisturizers to leave in his office and car, since he's too much of a guy to think to buy some of his own. Even though his hands are chapped to the point of bleeding. Sigh. Lucky for me he works near Penn Station so I'm going to drop them off on my way home tonight.
My newlywed cousin's new wife, Erica-3, and I made tentative plans to go to Woodbury Commons Sunday morning. We had to be there when it opened, so that the crowds would be manageable and so I could drive her back to NJ for her family's Chanukah party. So I woke up at 7:30, called her cell to make sure she'd be ready, left a message, and went back to sleep. She called at 4 but I missed it. I think we were both too tired to go shopping so early in the morning.
When I finally really woke up Sunday, I spent some time stitching and catching up on my DVRed TV shows, including the scuba episode of Bones. I did laundry, caught up with some chores, and spent a very quiet day in anticipation of a busy week.
I think I'm going to bail on my needlepoint meetup this week since that's the last night of Chanukah. I'll get my stitching fix though, wednesday is another Sit & Stitch at Lazy Daisy Stitchery. If you're in the neighborhood stop by.
I started my Fair & Square exchange over the weekend. It's a fun stitch. I'd like to finish it this week, but we'll see how that goes. I'm bringing the BC snappers Wednesday night to show Diana my progress, and I'm not sure how much stitching time I'll have the other nights.
Thanks for all the great suggestions about the BC Snappers! I'm going with SweetPea's excellent idea of February Knows, using this BC freebie pattern for the groundhog and tweaking it to fit the 50x50 block. T suggested a good idea for December, so keep an eye out for a pic when I've finished it - until then it's a surprise. I'm about 40% done with the November block, so I have to get cracking charting December. Oy.
Beatrice - I've only ever seen bowling with 10 pins and a large bowling ball.

I'm about 40% done with the November block, so I have to get cracking charting December. Oy.

Picasa experiment
[Photo 1] This is my first LHN finish! Also my LHN start, so that's good :) It was pretty quick to stitch, and I think I'm going to try more LHN designs in the future. This one is going to look great in my bedroom, which has a lot of green already.
[Photo 2] I finished this over the summer but recently pulled it out to show someone, so I figured I'd post a pic of it. It's a design by JBW, French Country Apple and took me about 2 days to stitch.
I'm seriously annoyed with myself over this piece. When I stitched this, I thought it was strange to write "Pomme" instead of "La Pomme", since in French you usually put an article of some sort and not just a noun, but I went against my instinct and stitched it as directed. Well now I'm working on the Pear from this series, and the pattern calles for "La Poire"! I think I'm going to change this one - better have them both right than both wrong, even if it means more work for me.
[Photo 3] I went to my LNS yesterday to pick up threads for the next photo, my BC snappers, and walked out with some additional thread purchases, my first Q-snaps, and LHN's new design "Princess and the P". I know I'm trying not to get new charts until I stitch some stash, but I finished a couple of things lately, so I went for it.
Of course Ihad to change the color of the dog to match Sky, and I'm not a huge fan of light pink with black so I ended up changing all the colors... And now the bed is blue :-) I had blue sheets in my dorm.
I'm still not sure about the color of the pillow. You can barely see it on the left side of the bed, I might have picked too light a color. Oh well, I'm going to finish stitching it and then consider what to do. Any advice?
[Photo 4] I'm making some progress on my Bent Creek snappers, but I misplaced the July chart for a couple of days, so I started on August. "Rings" is off-by-one to the left but I'm not sure if I care. Then I discovered I forgot to get any Lancaster Red, and half the August pattern's done in red... thus my LNS run yesterday. Despite starting the new LHN I actually worked on this yesterday too, and now that I have the colors and the pattern July is going down. Tonight.

Stitchers rock!
I just got back from the LNS about an hour ago - yes at 10pm. The Lazy Daisy Stitchery had a stitch in night where you could bring your work in progress and work on it there, and also pick up supplies. There were about 15 people and it was filled to capacity. The shop is smallish, very long and narrow but it's laid out extremely well, not many stands or pieces of furniture so it wasn't too tight a tight fit. One woman next to me was working on the Village of Hawks Run Hollow, which I'd seen on the internet and other peoples' blogs so it was cool to see it in person finally. And she was working it over one thread! It's coming out very small but it is gorgeous, I hope she brings it to next months' stitch in so I can see the progress :) Another person was working on an enormous project with a submarine and animals, I never got to see the front but from the back it looked very nice ;)
I tried working on the Bent Creek month snappers but I'd forgotten my scissors so it was v. frustrating, so I switched to LK's February blocks and did the foliage on the tree. I didn't go too crazy with the shopping, just picked up the patterns of the 3 months I'm missing from the BC snappers, then some threads and fabric for a couple of stash patterns (and they're on my list so it's okay). I also got a really nice kit to make for my exchange partner at Fair and Square, and not that she or anybody actually reads this blog but I'm not posting pics or more info until I mail the thing out.
This is going to be a relatively short post. I wasn't feeling to well today (until I went to the LDS of course) so I'm going to get some sleep and hope for the best. I have an interview tomorrow, and I also REALLY REALLY don't want to feel sick on Yom Kippur, that is the worst. Good night all.
