Overheard in the office today

I'm teaching MZ to knit during our lunch hour. She's finally mastered the knit stitch :-) Anyways, we knit at her desk which is relatively high traffic.

Some dude walks past us, notices the knitting, and says, "Oh, do people still do that? I thought it was a dying art". Seriously?

MZ used to be in a different group, and one of the guys she used to work with stopped by to see what was up. He asked MZ to make him a scarf, so I offered to teach him to make his own scarf (I've taught some of the guys at work before). He'd been watching us for a while, so he was able to articulate exaclty why he wasn't interested:
"It's like tying your shoes. I don't like tying my shoes. No, it's like tying your shoes 1,000 times. With chopsticks."
LOL

PS At least they didn't ask what we were sewing. Honestly people, can you really not tell the difference between sewing and knitting?!? I don't ask you if you think the Giants are going to win the World Series, do I?!?

That's cute.

Technically, you could ask if the Giants are going to win the World Series, but you'd have to be in San Francisco.

I guess for someone not involved in the crafting world, it's possible that they wouldn't know how hot/trendy knitting is now, but who knows?

I had to LOL at the sewing...

Until I got his vocabulary adjusted, my husband used to call my cross stitching "sewing". I explained to him there was a *huge* difference between sewing and stitching...and it finally caught on.

But this is the same guy who thinks any bread product is the same as any other bread product...hence muffins = rolls = biscuits, and all words are interchangeable. Cinnamon rolls are called muffins, biscuits are called rolls...his take is that "it's all bread". *sigh*

As a knitting-impaired person, I do appreciate the guy's comment about tying shoes 1000 times with chopsticks, though. That was pretty good!

I love that tying the shoe thing. Some people just don't get it do they. Enjoy the knitting.

Picture this: DBF and I in the Eurostar, both with our PSP. A young woman in the seat near us, with a big music case. As DBF went for coffee, I decided to take my stitching.
And here's the girl saying "oh, and now you are knitting, so clever!" Hu, no, no knitting, needle and thread, come on...

See, people are like that all over the world...

My 8 year old calls my stitching knitting too. When he thinks I'm bugging him about something he always says "go back to your knitting, Mom!" You have a great blog - thanks for visiting mine! I am adding you to my list of inspirations.
